What Is Stretch Mark Removal?
Stretch marks, also called striae, are most popular for their telltale signs after pregnancy. They are caused by rapid stretching and also occur after hormonal changes, puberty, and weight fluctuations. Though harmless, many people want them removed to improve their appearance. There are two ways to remove stretch marks: Laser therapy (a non-invasive approach) and topical creams.

Retinoid Cream
Retinoid creams are one of the most effective topical treatments for improving the appearance of new stretch marks (red/purple). These creams boost collagen production, speed up cell turnover, and gradually reduce the depth and colour of stretch marks.

How Retinoid Cream Works
Retinoids are derived from Vitamin A and work by:
- Repairing damaged skin and smoothing stretch marks.
- Encouraging new, healthier skin cells to replace the damaged ones.
- Tightening the skin and making it more adaptable
- Fading of new (red/purple) stretch marks over time.
Laser Therapy
This non-invasive treatment uses focused light energy and stimulates elastin and collagen production, promoting skin regeneration.
Types of Laser Therapy
- Fractional COâ‚‚ Laser: Removes the damaged skin layers and promotes new cell growth.
Best for: Older, deeper, white/silver stretch marks
- Pulsed Dye Laser (PDL): Targets redness in new stretch marks and boosts collagen production.
Best for: New, red/purple (vascular) stretch marks
How Laser Therapy Works
The process involves controlled light energy beams being directed at the stretch marks, which the skin absorbs. As the light energy penetrates the deepest layer of the skin, a healing response is triggered, leading to increased elastin and collagen production. This helps make the stretch marks less visible and rebuilds the damaged skin.
The laser removes damaged and old skin cells, giving way to healthier and newer skin. As time passes, your skin becomes firmer, smoother and more youthful-looking.

Microneedling with Radiofrequency (RF)
Microneedling with Radiofrequency (RF) is a minimally invasive aesthetic treatment that combines microneedling with RF energy to stimulate collagen production, tighten skin, and reduce stretch marks.

How Microneedling with RF Works
Microneedling
A device equipped with ultra-fine needles creates controlled micro-injuries (tiny punctures) in the skin’s surface. These micro-injuries stimulate the body’s natural healing response, triggering collagen and elastin production. These are essential for skin repair and regeneration. The process breaks down old, damaged tissue (such as stretch marks), encouraging new, healthier skin formation.

Radiofrequency (RF) Energy Application
Unlike traditional microneedling, RF microneedling delivers radiofrequency energy deep into the dermis (middle layer of the skin) through the microneedles. The heat generated by RF energy tightens the skin, remodels collagen fibres, and stimulates fibroblast cells, further enhancing skin repair and rejuvenation. This added heat energy accelerates tissue remodelling, making it highly effective for deeper, more stubborn stretch marks that might not respond well to other treatments.

Is Stretch Mark Removal Treatment Safe?
Yes, stretch mark removal treatments are generally safe, but their effectiveness and safety depend on the type of treatment, skin type, and individual health conditions. Most treatments, such as laser therapy, microneedling with RF, and retinoid creams, are FDA-approved and widely used by dermatologists and aesthetic professionals.

Is Stretch Mark Removal Treatment Painful?
The pain level of stretch mark removal treatments varies depending on the procedure type, individual pain tolerance, and skin sensitivity. Most treatments cause mild to moderate discomfort but are generally well-tolerated with numbing creams or cooling techniques.
- Microneedling with RF: Very Mild
- Laser Therapy (COâ‚‚, PDL): Moderate

How Long Do Stretch Mark Removal Results Last?
The longevity of stretch mark removal results depends on the treatment type, skin type, lifestyle, and aftercare. While no treatment can completely erase stretch marks, many significantly reduce their appearance, and results can last for years with proper maintenance.
Microneedling with RF
- Long-lasting (1-3 years)
- Occasional touch-ups (every 12-18 months)
Laser Therapy (COâ‚‚, PDL)
- Long-term (2+ years)
- Touch-ups (every 1-2 years)
Frequently Asked Questions
Can stretch marks be removed entirely?
No treatment can 100% remove stretch marks, but many can significantly reduce their appearance by improving skin texture, tone, and elasticity.
How many sessions are needed?
Most treatments require 3 to 6 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, for optimal results. Topical treatments must be applied until the desired result is achieved.
Who is the best candidate for stretch mark removal?
Anyone with new or old stretch marks looking for noninvasive solutions is an ideal candidate for laser therapy and RF microneedling.
Can I remove stretch marks at home?
Home remedies like aloe vera, coconut oil, shea butter, and vitamin E can improve skin hydration and elasticity, but will not completely remove stretch marks.
Are stretch mark treatments suitable for all skin types?
Yes! Most treatments are safe for all skin tones, but laser therapy may need adjustments for darker skin to avoid pigmentation issues.
